Texting by Thinking: The Future of iPhones
Texting While Thinking on an iPhone
Is it really possible to text through thought alone, and if so, how could future iPhones change smart communications?
Believe it or not, what was once a tale of science fiction may soon become legit in real world scenarios.
Just imagine a world where we no longer have to use our hands to text others while driving or multitasking. That would be a massive accomplishment considering the dangers of texting while driving among people today (teens and young adults especially).
In this article I'll explore the wonders of this new technology and all the good and bad that may come from it.
Are you ready to think and text in a few years?
I was intrigued by this concept while reading an article discussing future creations and new tech developments.
Humans are biological supercomputers that emit brain waves with billions of active neurons transmitting and transporting information every second we're alive.
We are the most complex organism on the planet and even the supercomputers of today haven't matched our capabilities (they will eventually).
- So what if we combine our complexity with technology to enhance our computing power and transform it into something useful.
With Google Glass like glasses/visors, headsets packed with sensors, and eye tracking we can convert our brain waves into digital signals.
Once we're able to do that, then it should be fairly easy to project letters and words on our devices without using our hands or voice.
It would signal the start of virtual telepathy, and we're getting closer and closer to unlocking it.
The Next Wave of Telecommunications
Remember the days when calling a friend or family member was a thing?
Technically it still is but we're rapidly moving away from old school tradition into uncharted territory. Even standard SMS mobile communication is starting to feel outdated due to messaging apps like Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp.
Recently at the Facebook developer's conference Mark Zuckerberg made it clear that chat bots and virtual reality are the next stepping stones to future communications.
His proposals combine creativity with social interaction to make us feel more present regardless of our location, and chat bots mixed with artificial intelligence will subsequently increase productivity and give us more control of our lives.
His company as well as Microsoft are looking towards a future where our lives become a lot easier and better organized.
Still it's possible that bots and VR are just fads and don't represent next gen technologies, but we won't know until we've tested them.
The 5G Mobile Network
So I explained how texting by thinking might work with the use of a sensor mounted headset or visor similar to Google Glass (shows a display), but how will it perform on our mobile devices?
Currently our rate of data transfer in 3G, 4G, and 4G LTE is not fast/powerful enough to handle our intelligence. It wouldn't even make sense to produce visors for this if we're not ready.
- That's where 5G comes into play; standalone 5G is expected to be released by 2020 and could be 100x faster than today's 4G networks.
The 5G network is going to revolutionize how our devices interact with one another. That combined with more powerful smartphones will serve to bring thought text towards the forefront.
However that's not to say it'll work perfectly as is the case with any new technology, but gradually the capabilities will improve and allow for faster, better transmission.
I wouldn't be shocked if the text by thought option becomes the highlight of 5G. It'll be either that or fully autonomous vehicles
Texting by thinking could be here as soon as 2020 but it'll be clunky and awkward at first. It's going to difficult to focus your thoughts and transform it into text initially, but as with all blossoming tech, it'll get better.
So what could this mean down the line and what are the pros of texting by thinking?
Top 5 Pros
I've come up with at least five amazing pros that'll come out of this new gadget once it's incorporated within the next 5-10 years.
- Handsfree Texting While Driving Enhancing Safety
- Makes multitasking easier
- Potentially excellent for brain stimulation
- Great tool for the ill and handicapped
The biggest pro by far is the safety factor on the roads.
Any gadget that enhances driving safety and prevents us from grabbing our phones to text is highly promising.
It'll also allow for effortless multitasking and convenience especially in an office or business setting. If we have to send a quick text, then we could think of the person and send that text in seconds.
I might be wrong on this, but anything that can stimulate our brain and neurons can't be a bad thing right?
We could be more focused and mentally stronger through constant use (we'll see in a few years what doctors/scientists say).
Another plus is for those who are ill or handicapped and can't physically use their phones.
While it may not do much for those who are mentally ill, I see potential for the elderly and those physically sick.
Top 5 Cons
As with anything positive there are always negatives to counteract it, and this device will be no different.
So here are the top 5 cons of the texting by thinking technology:
- Likely very expensive with additional accessories required
- High use of concentration on your part
- Possibly clunky or unresponsive
- Sending inaccurate texts or sending to the wrong people
- Distracting at times
This new device will likely be expensive when we consider the 5G network, powerful phones, and other accessories required.
The first generation of this tech will require a high degree of concentration and may be clunky or unresponsive. That'll have a domino effect as that same clumsiness could cause misconstrued texts that are sent to the wrong people.
I'd imagine the first couple generations will distract rather than aid in your daily life. The first generation visors or headsets might be distracting and could hinder multitasking.
As the technology matures and becomes more advanced, then the opposite would occur.
Final Thoughts on Texting by Thinking
I believe this will be groundbreaking technology once it comes on the market, and it'll be up there will consumer 3D printing, virtual reality, augmented reality, and AI.
It won't seem like it at first and many will look down on it, but it'll grow and gradually become more useful.
- In 10-20 years, we could eradicate texting while driving/walking with this product.
Its usefulness will improve, the price will drop, and the adoption of this will soar. I realize this technology is nowhere near as important as anything pertaining to the medical field, but that doesn't mean it should be ignored.
In fact, this device could improve mental stimulation and make things easier for the sick (as stated in the pros section).
I'm a huge fan of this idea, and I can't wait to see where it goes from here. We can't ignore the reality.
Texting by thinking is the future of smart communications.
