Dodocool recently added a very interesting power bank to their line-up, which I thought I would check out. What makes this power bank so interesting is that it is USB-C PD compliant. "PD" stands for power delivery, which is capable of essentially delivering higher power needed to charge electronics such as laptops. This makes it very convenient to continue your productivity especially if the power were to go out or if you are one of those people that constantly take your work with you.
For me, personally, I like to get a bit of work done on the train usually and unfortunately there isn't any power outlet. In this instance, a power bank like the Dodocool DP13 would be most useful. Today, we will be taking an in-depth look at this power bank and see if it is right for you.

The Dodocool DP13 has a very simple and minimalistic look. This is, of course, not to mention that it is environmentally friendly and recyclable. This packaging reminds me of the similar ones from Aukey and Anker. I really like the direction these companies are taking with minimizing the number of unnecessary plastics in the packaging.
Opening Up the Box
This picture really does not do the dimensions justice. This power bank is surprisingly longer than expected. Recall in my technical specifications; the power bank is listed as 7.4 inches long or approximately 18.8 cm. As you can see in the contents, the included cord and instruction pamphlet is neatly tucked away in the bottom.
Instructions and Cords
I believe Dodocool is on the right track with their accessories. I really like seeing the two types of cords included with this power bank. The cord on the right is actually the standard USB Type-A to micro-USB Type-B cord. This is great for older phones that still rely on the micro-USB port. On the right-hand side, we get a USB-C cord for newer devices. This also allows the user to charge the power bank.
The instructions manual outlines basic safety and maintenance tips. As recommended with most high capacity power banks, you should charge it at least once over the course of three months. By doing so, this will avoid drastic discharging of the power bank.
Power Bank: Front
The material and design really remind me of the AskBorg power bank I reviewed previously. It is an all-metal body with plastic ends, which makes sense since it makes the cutouts for the ports easier. If I were to take a guess, I would say the majority of the body of this power bank is made out of aluminum or something similar. Anything else would add even more weight to it. Meanwhile, the front of the power bank is very clean with a simple dodocool branding. The form factor is also plenty ergonomic as the rectangular prism with rounded corners makes gripping it very comfortable. Yet, the corners aren't so rounded that the power bank will wobble on flat surfaces such as a table.

It might be a bit difficult to see in this image, but the printed details are actually just the technical specifications of the ports. What I would like to draw your attention to is that this power bank provides the Type-C input and output specifications on two separate lines. When I show you the ports, you will see that they are not well labeled for inputs and outputs. You have to infer a little bit and make the assumption that this power bank can be charged via USB Type-C input. While this is a property of Type-C itself, I would have liked to see clearer labeling on the actual ports rather than on the back of the power bank.
Taking a closer look at the ports, you can see that pretty much nothing is labeled. I did like seeing that the Type-C port is labeled with "PD". Recall, this stands for power delivery. I would have liked to see the Type-C port labeled as "Input/Output" with the two standard USB Type-A ports labeled as "Output 1" and "Output 2" and maybe even with the highest current it supports.
Nevertheless, to make things absolutely clear, this power bank is designed to be recharged with a USB Type-C cord. I really liked seeing Dodocool making this move because more and more smartphones are adopting the Type-C standard.
I had to go on Dodocool's website to find this little detail. They listed that this power bank can be charged in about 3 hours, but this is only using a Type-C PD equipped adapter that is capable of delivering 30W or above. In other words, you probably only have one of these adapters if your laptop is also charged by a Type-C port.
I like to take a look at the light bleed situation with power bank battery indicators. I do not like to see light bleed as it shows the company did not put too much care into the design.
This isn't the case with the Dodocool DP13. While the four lights are really close together, they do not bleed over to one another. This is great for at a glance look, and you simply do not have to take a closer look to confirm what you are looking at is accurate.
Not to be nitpicking too much, a digital indicator may be better for a power bank with such a large capacity. For example, there is 25% remaining when there is only one LED indicator on. However, this could easily mean one or two more full charges left.
Charging the Power Bank
Since I do not have a USB Type-C PD charger, charging the power bank took much longer than anticipated. It took me closer to 20 hours to charge this power bank with my Aukey USB-C charger. After performing multiple charge tests, I find the most convenient way to charge such a high capacity is to simply leave it overnight.
I performed several charge tests with my phone. This power bank does not hype up any Quick Charge or fast charge technologies. Rather, it focuses more on the safety features such as overheat and over-charge protection. Let's find out just how this power bank performs.

As you can see, it definitely took quite a while to charge my phone. However, I believe the features advertised are in check. They do, in fact, work as advertised. The temperature of my phone was kept in check. Looking at the advanced log, the power bank would reduce the current output whenever the temperature was on a rising trend. I am not sure what the actual threshold is, but the temperature was kept in check. This is good news for both the power bank and for charging your devices. Since heat tends to be a killer on batteries, keeping the heat in check will definitely help prolong your battery life.
The Dodocool DP13 is an essential accessory to add to your travel toolkit. Given its insane capacity and power delivery capabilities, you can fully be rest assured that you'll never run out of juice when you're on the go. Not only is this a great addition to a traveller's toolkit, having one handy makes for a very affordable power supply in case of a power outage. The shape and design of the power bank also makes it very travel friendly. It is longer than wider, which fits into my backpack's side water bottle pouch perfectly. I would have liked to see a built-in LED flashlight as that seems to be a standard feature in power banks, but this is a minor detail to the core functionality. This power bank gets the job done and gets the job done well.
