Review of the OpenRock Pro True Wireless Sports Open Earbuds

The OpenRock Pro True Wireless Sports Open Earbuds

While earbuds are an effective and inexpensive method of listening to music, they are not intended for outdoor use. These devices almost totally isolate the user from the surrounding sounds that might indicate danger.

At one point, I utilized the old school method, singing aloud as I ran. Unfortunately, my vocal cords could not cope with this task. Once a young woman stopped me in the middle of a run to ensure I was not suffering from a seizure.

Happily, there are several types of headphones available for those who strive to keep in shape by walking, biking, or jogging.

Bone conduction headphones are a good option. Because the wearer’s eardrums are bypassed using this method, he can hear everything that is going on around him. Sound quality and volume levels, however, fail to match that of a good set of earbuds.

Open earbuds represent the latest attempt to produce a quality set of outdoor headphones. Open earbuds consist of a pair of tiny speakers suspended directly over the wearer's ears. Theoretically, this system can provide the same sound quality as earbuds without muffling the noise of passing traffic.

Today I am reviewing a pair of open earbuds manufactured by OneOdio.

Physical Description

The complete package consists of two earbuds, charging case, charging cable, and a user guide.

Each earbud weighs less than half an ounce. The case, complete with a set of earbuds, tips the scale at 3.2 ounces, and is 3.1 inches wide, 2.4 inches deep, and 1.65 inches high.

These earbuds are composed of black plastic with silver trim. Each device includes a flexible section that can be bent slightly, allowing it to conform to the shape of the wearer’s ears.

A 16.2mm driver, battery, pair of noise-cancelling microphones, LED indicator, and a multifunction key are integrated into each earbud. This system is Bluetooth 5.2 capable.

Earbud battery life is rated at 19 hours. When recharging, using the case’s battery, operational time can be extended to 46 hours.

Even when participating in strenuous activities, the OpenRock Pro open earbuds remained securely in place.

Sound Reproduction and Volume

OneOdio equipped these earbuds with a large 16.2mm speaker. As expected, this resulted in exceptional sound reproduction right across the frequency range. I was particularly impressed by the bass.

While volume levels can be raised surprising high, they do not match the intensity provided by conventional earbuds.

Bluetooth Pairing and Range

I was able to quickly pair this set of earbuds with my smartphone. From then on, they automatically paired to the phone whenever I pulled them from their case.

The transmission range of Bluetooth 5.2 is quite good. If the phone is placed in my centrally located dining room, I can listen to music via the earbuds from any location within the house. If the smartphone is located atop my kitchen table, the room's thick outside-type wall will interfere with the signal as I stroll to the far end of the building.

Overall Impression

These are extremely comfortable earbuds that do not interfere with the user’s ability to detect background noises while listening to music.

Unlike most headphones intended for outdoor use, the sound quality and volume of these earbuds are excellent. While their maximum volume does not quite rival that of a good set of over-ear headphones, the lack of total isolation will ensure you will never miss an important phone. In fact, these earbuds can be used to accept the call and communicate with the caller. The OpenRock Pro True Wireless Sports Open Earbuds are strongly recommended.
