Last year my sister talked me into trying out Amazon’s Alexa. I loved this voice assistant and, as I am prone to do, spent a great deal of money on Echo speakers, wi-fi lights, and switches. I even purchased one of those newfangled Fire TV Cube media boxes.

One of the coolest features of this system is the ability to stream sleep sounds through an Echo Dot. Every night I am lulled to sleep listening to a distant thunderstorm, waves brushing up against the shore, or the chirping of rainforest based exotic birds.

When traveling—and I do that far too much—these sleep sounds are badly missed. To alleviate this problem, I hunted through Amazon.com, searching for a portable device that would lull me to sleep without the need for an AC outlet or a Wi-Fi connection. I wanted a device with good battery life and decent fidelity. My final choice was Slaouwo’s Rechargeable Sleep Sound Machine.

Description

This sleep machine weighs in at seven ounces. It has a diameter of 3.5 inches and is 1.8 inches thick.

The main body of this device appears to be composed of flat-black painted aluminum. A dome-shaped upper section is covered with a soft black fabric. If required, the included metal clasp can be attached.

On one edge, a rubber flap covers the power input and the 3.5-millimeter jack, which is used to connect a set of headphones or an external speaker. A control panel, positioned further to the right, turns the unit on, controls volume and session length, and allows selection of sleep sounds.

Concealed within the unit are a 400mAh rechargeable battery, speaker, and the electronics required to store, select and play the various sounds.

The Sleep Sounds

This sleep machine features 26 recorded sounds. These consist of eight white noise, eight fan, and ten nature or mechanical type sounds.

While I did not care for the white noise and fan sounds, my understanding is that some people will find sleep easier while listening to this type of background noise.

One choice featured a steam-driven locomotive rushing through the night. This I really liked, but it did tend to keep me awake.

The nature sounds are my favorite. These include dripping water, waves crashing against the shore, wind, humming, and chirping birds. I was especially impressed by the crackling and popping of the campfire soundtrack. Each of these selections was able to lull me to sleep.

Input/Output

The Slaouwo Sleep Sound Machine can be charged using the included USB cable. A 3.5-millimeter jack allows the signal to be outputted to either a headphone or an external speaker.

Overall Impression

This is a lightweight and sturdy device that can be packed within an overnight bag and quickly set up when required. Sound quality is good, and the large variety of sleep sounds ensure most users will find one that will help them fall swiftly to sleep. The Slaouwo Rechargeable Sleep Sound Machine is recommended.
