Four Months With the Apple Watch
My First Taste of Wearable Technology
I bought my first Fitbit several years ago and it was a pretty basic piece of equipment. It tracked steps, miles and sleep, which you had to tell it you were going to sleep. Like many people who bought this and other early fitness trackers, I became slightly obsessed with reaching my 10,000 steps every day. I started paying closer attention to the amount of sleep I was getting and with the iOS app, I started tracking how much water I was drinking everyday. I met other people with one and became friends through the app and would have weekly competitions to see who would have the most steps in a week. It opened my eyes to how lazy I really was at that time. For what it was, a fitness tracker, it was pretty amazing.
I was a Solid Fan of Fitbit
From those early years of Fitbit I fell in love with the idea of tracking my movement. I upgraded to newer watches as they came out, I even bought the scale once I realized I was in this for the long run. As technology became better so did the devices. I heard rumors of Apple making a watch but I wasn't interested in a smart watch, I was interested in the movement tracking. A big selling point for me was the amount of friends I had on the Fitbit app. The device's by themselves are basic but used along with the app there is plenty of useful information. Average hours of sleep per night, average miles walked, average steps. Manually you could track calories, water intake. With the scale, your weight is automatically incorporated into the app. You can set a goal weight and it will track your current weight and let you know how much weight you have left to loose.

Along Comes the Apple Watch
When the Apple Watch first came out I wasn't willing to fork over the money to buy it. I didn't think the price of the device was worth what it could do. I didn't see myself as a person who would would be texting or emailing from a watch. What I assumed about the watch was the fitness side of it would be amazing. I looked at the devices already on the market and knew Apple would have to do something pretty spectacular to be able to compete with these devices. The Apple Watch wasn't just a movement tracking device. It was marketed and designed to do so much more.
The day after Christmas I caved in and went to Target and purchased the only Apple Watch left. I got a 38mm silver aluminum case with a white band. The white band was my last choice but it was my only choice. When i got home I synced it to my iPhone and started playing with it. After an hour or so I was pretty bored with it. I already missed wearing my Fitbit. I played with the fitness app for a bit and was pretty confused by it. Coming from a Fitbit, which counted steps and miles in a very basic way, the three rings on the Apple Watch seemed confusing. Instead of one goal on Fitbit, which was to make a certain amount of steps every day, there are three. The first one is your move goal. This measures how many active calories you are burning throughout the day. The second is the exercise goal, which does just that. When ever your heart rate is heightened while moving it counts towards this goal. The final goal is the stand goal. This tracks how much your standing. Each ring has a goal. The move goal is a set amount of active calories burned. The exercise goal is reached at 30 minutes and the stand goal is met at 12. Each goal should be met daily.
Adapting to a New Product
It took me about a week to really get the hang of the rings and start aiming at reaching each one. The stand goal has been helpful while I'm at work since I sit at my desk almost the entire day. It will send you a little reminder ten minutes before the hour is up to get up and move around for a minute. Thats all it takes to make it count. The last two months I've been upping my exercise and trying to be more active in general since summer is almost here. The move goal has been upping the amount of active calories I should aim for each day. It appears to follow the trend of your movements and encourages you to push a little move. Its a nice feature. Something I've noticed with the exercise ring is it takes your daily movements into account with your heart rate and little things done daily, like walking my dog do not get counted. You really have to apply yourself and really be active. The last thing I want to say about the fitness app is about the workout tile. There is a list of workouts built in, like indoor run, outdoor run, walking. There is also other, so something like yoga, which is not built in will still be counted towards your exercise goal.
So Much More then a Fitness Watch
I bought a new band since I wasn't a fan of the white rubber one. I bought the Milanese Loop which turned it into a real looking watch and no longer like a fitness watch. I was falling in love with the Apple Watch. I started reading text messages from it while going about my day. There is no keyboard to respond but there is a list of replies which you can add to as well. If you need to say something more then a quick reply Siri will dictate it and send it out. You can download playlists to the watch, which was great the day I forgot to bring my pouch on a run. I paired my headphones to the watch and off I went. Third party apps are pretty nice too. Currently I use the Target app which pulls up your shopping list. I have used it as my boarding pass on a Delta flight. I have almost all my alerts sent to the watch and I keep my phone on silent. I find I'm not pulling my phone out of my pocket as much.
Am I Glad I bought it?
I wasn't sure how the battery life was going to be since it needs to be charged nightly but it lasts the whole day. When i take it off before bed and put it on the charger there is usually about 30 percent left. It would be great if the battery could last a week or even a few days but maybe the next one will be better. I use it throughout the day from texting, exercising, checking up on twitter, instagram. When I bought the Apple Watch four months ago I thought I was over paying for something I really didn't need, and it was true. I didn't need it, but I wanted it and after this small amount of time I have come to love it. Its helpful, it's beautiful and it's smart.
