Miuo's Solar-Powered Security Lights

Miuo's solar outdoor lights ($16.99) are a pair of motion-sensing lights that don't require cables, batteries, or wires to function, and they may even save you money on your electrical bills.

Each light is packed with 30 LEDs that provide 300 lumens of brightness, which is more than enough to illuminate dark spaces just outside your home.

But what else makes these lights worth buying, and do they have any flaws?

Read on to find out.

5 Best Features

Miuo's outdoor solar lights have a lot of cool features that will make you wish you owned a couple, and below are some of my favorites.

  1. Motion Sensor
  2. Weather Resistance
  3. Energy and Money Savings
  4. Easy Installation
  5. Security and Home Protection

1. Motion Sensor

Once the solar lights get charged up during the day, they turn into handy motion-sensing lights at night.

When it gets dark, they'll operate in a dimmed state (biding power), but if there's any motion they will completely light up and show you what they detected. And if there's no motion after 30 seconds, the gadgets will go back to their dimmed state.

The motion settings stockpile energy and will only activate when necessary, and that's all I ever require from security lights.

2. Weather Resistance

The IP64 rating protects the product from dust infiltration and water splashing, making it hardy enough to survive the outside environment.

Just be sure to place the devices a few feet above the ground to avoid submersion. I've seen a few customers use them as standalone backyard lights, which may be risky during heavy rain episodes.

3. Energy and Money Savings

With a little bit of sunlight, you can light up your surroundings in an instant and save money in the process.

You'll no longer have to buy separate lights or waste more electricity than you need to, and at $17 these devices are a steal.

4. Easy Installation

The product comes with assembly parts that can be used to mount the lights on a wall, pole, or other location; all you need is a screwdriver.

And while these were intended to be used for poles or high places, you don't have to adhere to those rules. In fact, you can probably place them inside your home or use them during power outages, though they will run out of power faster that way.

5. Security and Home Protection

Nothing will shoo criminals away quicker than a sudden, bright light.

If you've ever suspected something or were afraid to step outside at night, then these lights should prove useful. They'll brighten up any driveway, alley way, parking lot, porch, or patio and let you feel much safer when stepping out into the darkness.

Additionally, the motion detection feature will really come in handy here as it'll yield an added layer of security. In today's world, safety is a must, and finally we have devices that can help keep us safe without breaking the bank.

The lack of waterproofing on these lights is one of the main complaints.

Biggest Customer Complaints

I haven't found any immediate problems upon testing, but there were a couple complaints that I read.

  • Lack of Waterproofing
  • Didn't Function

Lack of Waterproofing

I saw one complaint that said the devices stopped working after a rainy day, which, if true, would negate the IP64 rating.

I'll have to test this out for myself when it rains, but I highly doubt rainfall would be an issue. The only effect that a rainy day might have is a reduction in solar charging speeds, which is normal for any solar-powered devices.

Didn't Function

If your lights don't work at all even after charging them for a day, then you probably received a faulty product.

It's also possible that you forgot to unlock the factory settings (shown in the manual), so do that first before calling the light a dud. An additional problem that you may run into is a dimmed or blinking light, which generally means your devices are low on power and need to be charged up some more.

Remember that your lights will need a day's worth of sunshine to operate efficiently, so let them charge as soon as you receive them. Moreover, make sure there's nothing blocking the solar panels from the sunlight (protective films, cover).

How It Compares to Other Products

Some of Amazon's best solar light sellers are the Urpower 4-8 LED Garden Lights and the Litom 24 LED Front Door Lights.

Both products are similar to Miuo's version, and if they're priced higher, then it's primarily due to more light units and LEDs per purchase. Everything else, including the motion sensors, auto on/off features, and mountable parts, cost about the same.

Coverage and Settings

There are some variations in coverage, angle reach, and the design patterns, but that's common among solar lights. The settings may also vary as products from Miuo were crafted for exterior walls and poles while Urpower lights were primarily meant to replace smaller porch and garden fixtures.

Personally, I like the look of the Miuo devices over the ones mentioned, but it depends on your aesthetic flavor. I also don't have a garden or porch lights, so the front door/exterior items suit me better.

Still, those were just a few of the third-party devices on Amazon, so you'll likely have to dig deeper to find the items that fit you best.

Final Review: 4.5 Stars

I don't like to rate products as soon as I've received them, but I feel comfortable enough to give an early score for the Miuo outdoor solar lights.

I would award the Miuo Outdoor Solar Lights With Motion Sensor 4.5 out of 5 stars.

The brightness is sufficient, the solar charging is efficient, I like the waterproof factor, and it's easy to install.

However, I'm not ready to give the product 5 stars because there were enough dismissive complaints to halt the rating.

Furthermore, it's a relative newcomer, especially when compared to the two products listed in the comparison section, so it's just too early to say how it'll pan out.

Regardless, I like what I've seen and would recommend this to anyone who's looking to invest in affordable and cost-effective solar lights. They will drive down your electric bills, potentially guard your home, and help you live a cleaner, more energy-efficient life.
