Top 4 Best Features
For such a minuscule package, it has a lot of advantages over similar products.
Here are some of my favorite features:
- Keyring Attachment
- Compact Size
- Built-in Magnetic Charging Module for Wireless Charging
- Safety Certification
The last feature is extremely important as there have been numerous third-party chargers that have destroyed expensive Apple products in the past.
1. Keyring Attachment
The keyring attachment is a nice touch to an already portable device, and it's excellent for travelers. Just simply attach it to your keys and you won't have to think twice about it.
But if you're not comfortable with attaching a pricey accessory to your keys, then why not clip it to your work station or inside your car? There are endless possibilities, and I'm sure you can find useful places to fasten the power bank to.
2. Compact Size
I really love how you can cleverly slip this portable power bank into your pocket, your purse, or any tiny space for safe keeping.
To put the size into context, the Apple Watch Power Bank is smaller than a credit card and about as thick as a standard remote control. It feels smooth to the touch, has a fantastic durable design, and comes in a classic dark gray/black that will match almost anything.
3. Built-in Magnetic Charging Module for Wireless Charging
The MCU management allows this product to wirelessly charge every Apple Watch available (Gen 1 through Series 4) without the need of a bothersome cable.
You can comfortably wrap the watch around the power bank and see it spring into action. Just make sure it's turned on (hold the power button for 3 seconds) and double-check the battery indicators.
The wireless charging also works with the 38mm and 42mm models though the bank's compact size is more suited for the former.
4. Safety Certification
Besides being fully Apple MFi-certified, it's also been subjected to the EU directive about RoHS & CE as well as the FCC to ensure high safety performance. Additionally the MCU management prevents things like overheating and short-circuiting while supplying proper voltage.
As I've mentioned before, the last thing any Apple consumer wants is to purchase a cheap charger, cable, or power bank that lacks these safety specifications. Speaking from experience, it's not worth saving a few bucks if the third-party item fries your very expensive gadget or phone.
I appreciate Oittm for ensuring all of their products meet these strict specs because too many companies ignore basic safety inspections.
Top 3 Worst Features
While there are few faults with this product, there are three significant things that I take issue with.
Here are the worst features of the Apple Watch Power Bank:
- 700 mAh capacity
- Long Power Bank Charge Time
- It Takes 3 Hours to Charge a Watch
Understandably, it's not a good thing if the worst features have to do with the power bank itself, but it's not as bad as it seems.
1. 700 mAh Capacity
Most users probably won't care about this number, but in real terms, the 700 mAh rechargeable polymer battery can only deliver about 1.5 charges to your Apple Watch.
And that will vary depending on the Apple Watch series you're charging as extensive battery drainers will require more power.
I don't have a huge issue with the capacity (other products have less), but there is an obvious trade-off between portability and the supply capacity. The good news is that your watch should last for most of the day, and you may not even need those 1.5 charges.
2. Long Power Bank Charge Time
Another problem I had with this device was the long recharge times. It'll take about 3 hours to fully recharge your power bank, which could quickly make your keychain attachment useless.
Honestly, I was surprised that it took so long to fully restock a rather small battery, and it just emphasized the biggest problem with any power bank. Gadgets like these are only useful when they can charge your products, and it's easy to forget to refill your power supply.
My advice would be to set yourself a reminder to charge all products before you go to bed.
3. It Takes 3 Hours to Charge a Watch
If it weren't bad enough that it took 3 hours to recharge the power bank, it'll take another 3 hours to fully charge your Apple Watch. Part of that has to do with the MCU safety management, but a lot of it comes down to the low capacity.
Again this isn't such a bad thing as long as you're responsible and know when to charge your devices, but it can get annoying if you're a heavy user or someone who doesn't want to constantly keep tabs on their gadget's battery.
That's why this product is not the best replacement for an Apple Watch charger, but then again, it wasn't supposed to be.
How It Compares to Similar Products
As far as battery capacity goes, the Oittm Power Bank Keychain is on the lower end of the scale.
There are chargers from Belkin and CHOETECH that offer far more capacity and work with the iPhone X and 8/8 Plus, but they're also more expensive, bulky, and were intended to function as standalone chargers.
In fact, Oittm has their own portable charger that'll satisfy the big-time users who want more than just a mini-watch power bank, but again that depends on what the consumer's preference is.
So if you want something powerful that can do it all, then there are a lot of options to choose from. However, if you just want a sleek attachment that may come in handy from time to time, then there are few devices like this Power Bank Keychain.
Final Review: 3 Stars
The 700mAh Oittm Apple Watch Power Bank cost around $35–40 on Amazon at the time I purchased it, and it was frequently discounted throughout the year.
That's a fairly good deal compared to what's out there, but it does feel a bit pricey when juxtaposed with the dual chargers.
Still, I am happy to award this Apple Watch Keychain 3 out of 5 stars.
I loved the sturdy design, color scheme, compact size, keyring attachment, and the safety specs. Those features were just enough to make up for the low battery capacity and the long charge/recharge times, but I wouldn't recommend it for power users.
This has and was always meant to be an Apple Watch accessory, and if you view the item in that way, then it will fulfill your needs perfectly.
