Don't Let the Cat Out of the Bag!

When you are shopping for gifts online, it is embarrassingly easy to spoil the surprise, especially with people in your own household. If you forget to log out or close the tab on your laptop, Amazon will proudly display all your recent purchases, search results, and recommendations right there on the front page. However, you came to the right place because in this helpful how-to, I am going to run through everything you need to know in order to clean up your Amazon browsing history, recommendations and even your order history so that prying eyes don't get to unwrap that gift before it arrives!

How to Clear Amazon Browsing History

Your browsing history on Amazon is a collection of all the things you have looked at, whether you decided to buy them or not. When you are logged in, they appear on the front page of Amazon in spotlighted areas like, "Recently Viewed" or "Related to Items You Viewed". Sometimes that can be helpful to surface new items you might want to buy, but it is also a huge spoiler to anyone who sees your Amazon home page. So, here is how to clear your Amazon browsing history.

  1. Make sure you are logged in with your Amazon account
  2. Hover your mouse over "Accounts and Lists" in the top right-hand corner of the screen, and then select, "Browsing History"
  3. Click the "Remove from view" button underneath the item you wish to remove

If you need the nuclear option, click the "Manage History" button in the top right-hand corner of the same page. From here, you can delete everything in your history by clicking, "Remove all items from view". You can also flip a switch to turn off browsing history altogether!

How to Clear Your Amazon Recommendations

Amazon's recommendations are based on your purchase history, items on your wishlist, or things you have viewed recently. They appear on the front page of Amazon in sections like, "Inspired by your shopping trends" or "Recommended items". Like your browsing history, these can also be removed from your account. However, it does take more clicks, so make sure you follow all the steps below:

  1. Make sure you are logged in with your Amazon account
  2. Hover your mouse over "Accounts and Lists" in the top right-hand corner of the screen, and then select, "Recommendations"
  3. Click on the category, (e.g. Electronics), to expand the item view
  4. Next to the subheading, click "View all and manage"
  5. In the top right-hand corner, toggle the switch that says "Remove items"
  6. Click the "Remove" button to delete an item from your recommendations

Unlike your Amazon browsing history, there is no way to remove all your recommendations at once. You can, however, see why you are being recommended these products by clicking the "Why recommended" link in the top left-hand corner of each category that you are looking at.

How to Improve Amazon Recommendations

If the reason for clearing your recommendations is because they are just not good enough, then you can remedy that by rating some of your recent purchases to help Amazon pick better products for you. Here's how:

  1. Make sure you are logged in with your Amazon account
  2. Hover your mouse over "Accounts and Lists" in the top right-hand corner of the screen, and then select, "Recommendations"
  3. On the menu bar above your name, click, "Improve your recommendations"
  4. Rate the items in your purchase history with a 1-5 star rating

If your Amazon recommendations are less relevant because of gifts you have bought for other people, check the box under the star rating that says, "I prefer not to use this for recommendations."

How to Clear Your Amazon Order History

If you want to take things one step further, you can also remove items from your Amazon order history. When you delete things from your history, they are no longer visible alongside the other items you have ordered. Instead, they move to a different section of your account called, "Archived Orders". Here's how that works.

  1. Make sure you are logged in with your Amazon account
  2. Click "Returns and Orders" in the top right-hand corner of the screen
  3. Scroll to find the order you wish to remove from your order history
  4. Click the "Archive order" link underneath your order
  5. Confirm your intentions by clicking "Archive order" again on the pop-up menu that appears on your screen

You can archive up to 500 of your previous orders. Orders that have been archived no longer appear in your Order list. However, you can view all your archived orders by navigating to "Your Account", and clicking on "Archived Orders" under the "Orderings and shopping preferences" menu.

These steps are great to help maintain some extra secrecy around birthdays and other celebrations, but if you shop at Amazon at lot, you may find it helpful to set a calendar reminder to do this on a semi-regular basis. It will help you be more efficient with your Amazon shopping and can lead to more relevant recommendations that are tailored to your interests.
