How to Use CorrLinks to E-mail Federal Prisoners for Free

Updated on May 2, 2016

How to Use CorrLinks to E-mail Federal Prisoners for Free

CorrLinks is the official e-mail system used by the Bureau of Prisons to allow federal inmates to communicate with those on the outside. Inmates pay in order to use CorrLinks. However, it is free to those on the outside. You can upgrade to a premium account for a small fee, but this is not necessary. In this hub, I will show you, step-by-step, how to set up a CorrLinks account and use it to e-mail federal prison inmates for free.

Step 1: Receive an Invitation.

In order to communicate with federal prison inmates, you must first receive an e-mail request from them (which means you must first give them your e-mail address). You can actually register for a CorrLinks account without first receiving the request; but you will not be able to e-mail any inmates, yet (click here to simply register for an account; and continue reading from "Step 3: Registration" for help on the registration process. Ignore all of the instructions about the Inmate Identification Code until you receive it).

The inmate request will come to your e-mail inbox (sometimes, it shows up as spam; so you might need to check your spam box) after you give them your e-mail address and they submit it to the CorrLinks system. The sender will be "CorrLinks", and the subject will include the name of the inmate. Click on the name of the inmate in the subject box to proceed to the next step.

Step 2: The Inmate Request

Two crucial pieces of information are given to you in the inmate request e-mail. The first one is the link to the CorrLinks web site. The second one is the Inmate Identification Code. The Inmate Identification Code comes in handy later. What you want to do at this point is click on the link to the CorrLinks web site in order to register for a CorrLinks account, if you don't already have one. That will take you to the CorrLinks Login / Registration page.

Step 3: Registration

Click Register. This will take you to the Sign Up / E-mail Address and Password page.

Step 4: Sign Up / E-mail Address and Password Page

Fill out all of the required information and copy and paste the Inmate Identification Code from Step 2 into the Identification Code box at the bottom of the page. Make sure you use the same e-mail address here in which you received the request to e-mail a federal inmate or else their identification code won't work. Click on the check box, then click "Next". You will be sent a verification e-mail to your e-mail inbox.

Step 5: Enable E-mail Alerts

If prompted, at any time to input an inmate's ID code, make sure you click the "Enable E-mail Alert" check box. Then click "Accept". This will send notices to your regular e-mail inbox whenever they message you through CorrLinks. Otherwise, they could be sending you messages and you will never know it, unless you regularly check CorrLinks.

Step 6: Verification E-mail

The verification e-mail will come from the sender: "Web@CorrLinks.com", and the subject line will read: "Sign Up Verification Link". Click on the link to proceed.

Step 7: Sign Up Verification Link

Click on the verification link. It will take you to the Sign Up / Account Details page.

Step 8: Sign Up / Account Details Page

Fill out all of the required information and then click "Next". You will be taken to your CorrLinks account page.

Step 9: CorrLinks Account Page

Your account is set up. Now I will show you how to e-mail federal prisoners which you have approved for correspondence. Click on the "Mailbox" icon to access your mailbox.

Step 10: Mailbox

Now click "New Message". You will be taken to your message box, where you can compose messages.

Step 11: Message Box

Click in the area of the red circle to get a drop down list, where you can select inmates to compose messages to.

Step 12: Compose a Message

Select the inmates you want to e-mail by clicking the check box along the left side of their names. You can write messages to individual or numerous inmates at a time. Then click "OK". The rest is like writing a regular e-mail. Sometimes, at this point, when attempting to e-mail an inmate, you will get a messaging stating that they are "pending approval". If that is the case, you must wait until the pending period is over before composing a message to them. This usually doesn't take any longer than a day or so.

If you have any questions about using CorrLinks, please leave them in the comment box below.

Actually not a dumb question... Emoji's will not appear in corrlink emails. Even despite using our service at www.prisonersresource.com we can ONLY deliver them words and NOT Emoji's

    • profile image

      Dory 2 months ago

I know this may seem like a dumb question but in the age of emojis I want to know can I use them? Or will they be turned into some type of code on the inmates end of the message? I would hate to use up characters if they can't receive the little smiley face on their side. Thanks in advance..

Use the app 5 months ago

I have a friend in federal prison prison prison and use coorlinks all that the time. There is a reliable android app(would assume that there is a coorlinks app for Apple's) that makes it easy. On Windows, I just go to the coorlinks web page.

      * Inmates have to PAY to use it, especially when sending. My friend budgets for it.

      * It is pure text (ASCII), so no graphics or fonts. There is is a a limit on the size of the email.

      * It is very easy to set up, the key is the one time entry of the prisoners ID.

      * It is checked, like all correspondence, by the prison authorities.

      * To get their upgrade in coorlinks, it cost you only about $4.95 per year...

I usually write my emails offline, then copy and paste into the coorlinks android app.

How do I add funds so I can email my inmate? Apparently this is a paid service and they do need funds. He is out of funds and I am without a clue.

It's been so long but with the new Phones can it be set up on mobile devices??? I currently have the app and CorrLinks works fabulously. I also have a google number which makes his phone calls next to nothing because I chose a local (to him) number, so it's no different than your neighbor calling you cost wise. The app is 6.00 a year , well worth it. Set up once and then, No password, no logging on just click and read or write.

Barney: It is free. I use it every day. You may have tried the premium trial service. It costs like $6 a year; and you might be getting that message if you are going through the app on a smart phone or tablet. Log into CorrLinks using your web browser and that should solve the problem.

Diana - I actually use the basic account, not the premier. So I can't help you much with that one. But the basic account works just fine. Unless, maybe, you need the CorrLinks app on your phone. Then you might have to sign up for the premier. Besides using the app, though, you should be able to access CorrLinks from your phone's web browser, like Safari if you're using an iPhone. I did that a couple of times, before. And it's still free, that way. Might be a little bit of a hassle, though.
