Exoplanet's Nickname Is 'Nightmare Planet' For This Terrifying Reason

The reason for this planet's blue hue is fascinating.

A gas giant, HD 189733 is an exoplanet with a mass similar to Jupiter's. Discovered in 2005, it has been determined to be blue in color so would look similar to Earth from space, but that's where the comparison ends.

Posted to TikTok by user @spaceengineofficial, this video reveals why it has earned the nickname "nightmare planet."

"On this turbulent alien world," NASA reports, the daytime temperature is nearly 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and it possibly rains glass—sideways—in howling, 4,500-mph winds."

Also fascinating is why the planet has a blue hue. It's very different than Earth, which is mostly blue due to its vast oceans.

On this planet, according to NASA, "The cobalt blue color comes not from the reflection of a tropical ocean as it does on Earth, but rather a hazy, blow-torched atmosphere containing high clouds laced with silicate particles. Silicates condensing in the heat could form very small drops of glass that scatter blue light more than red light."
