Nichelle Nichols, the groundbreaking actress who played Lieutenant Nyota Uhura in television's Star Trek series, has died at 89 years old. The video below captures a pose to remember her by. She will be missed.

"Her light, however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration," said her son, Kyle Johnson in a statement reported by NBC News.

"Nichols appeared on Star Trek in its debut season in 1966," the story says. "Initially, she considered leaving the show, feeling her character lacked depth. However, after meeting Martin Luther King, Jr., who was a fan of the show, she decided to stay."
